Shipibo geometric design Calabash maraca - made by Peruvian Amazon artisan

These unique maracas are made from calabash tree pods (gourds) by Shipibo native artisan from the Peruvian Amazon.  This is the perfect rattle to keep the beat in your band, join a drum circle, or give children an immediate way to make their own music.

The pattern is a classic Shipibo clan geometric design called an icaro.  It is filled with dry achira seeds from forest gardens to give it a crisp natural sound.  The handle is made from sturdy pona palm.  Keep in mind that these special instruments are hand-made from natural materials from the forest so each rattle has its own pattern, shape, and sound.

The calabash pods in the maracas come in four typical sizes: Extra-small (2 1/4" x 3"), Small (3" x 3 1/4"), Medium (3 1/2" x 4"), Large (3 1/2 x 5"). Most handles are 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches long.
