OCTOBER IS FAIR TRADE MONTH - a great chance to support true fair trade enterprises including non-profit ones like CACE who are members of the Fair Trade Federation and practice all nine of their fair trade principles. Thanks for supporting us on Thursday, Oct. 5 - GlobalGiving Bonus Day at www.AmazonAlive.net. Following posts will describe each fair trade principle in turn.
Bracelets on woman at Philadelphia Folk Festival. The zig zag rainbow bracelet was made by Damaris Panaifo from Iquitos for CACE.
I stopped by the Fair Trade Winds store in the Ballard district of Seattle while enjoying a week long vacation in the Pacific Northwest. It's one of five great stores owned bt the Culler family in different parts of the US. I always enjoy meeting them at meetings of the Fair Trade Federation.
One of the most interesting questions I get while being a vendor at music festivals is: "Did you make all of these crafts?" Check out my response to these and other questions in our newest report on GlobalGiving at: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/amazon-native-artisans-and-rainforest-conservation/reports/?subid=94519.
Here we present a sample of the art and capacity of the artisans of the Amazon. This time, our friends Jenaro Herrera working a "monarch butterfly" handmade.
We hope you like it.
Many thanks to Virginia, Lois, and Brenda for helping me set up our booth at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Thanks to Lois for bringing water, snacks and moist toilettes since taking a shower was hard (other than the kind falling from the sky). Thanks to Brenda, Jackie, Juliana and a bunch of Craft area volunteers who got us packed and ready to go in speedy 5 hours. Sales were kind of slow all weekend but I was blown away watching Jackie interact with visitors to the booth with her infectious enthusiasm that led to a burst of sales in final hours. Made me realize the difference between someone who knows the issues well (me) and someone who can use a little information effectively.
Cool earrings from the Peruvian Amazon bought by two cool ladies at the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
